[mə'kleɪn], Bruce, schottischer Maler, Bildhauer und Konzeptkünstler, * Glasgow 1944; konzentriert sich in Gemälden, Skulpturen, Performances und Rauminstallationen auf die Problematik des Gleichgewichts, wobei er sowohl die physische als auch die philosophische Seite dieses Begriffs analysiert. So gelangt er über eine immanent ästhetische Erfassung der Spannungen zwischen Körper und Geist, Ruhe und Bewegung oder Form und Raum zu einer Darstellung der gegensätzlichen Kräfte und Energien, die sowohl die individuelle Lebenserfahrung als auch gesellschaftliche Beziehungen bestimmen. Besonders in den Installationen der späten 80er-Jahre formuliert er ein Gegenbild zu den rational-logischen Hierarchien industrieller Gesellschaften.
